The Sour Grape

Vergelegen Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot 2009

A Bordeaux Blend from South Africa that gives the French a run for their money.

A Bordeaux Blend from South Africa that gives the French a run for their money.

This Bordeaux blend (52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot), from Stellenbosch in the western cape of South Africa has a huge hit of mineral pencil lead and leafy Forrest floor (from the cabernet franc) on the nose to match its almost tawny colour. Distinct but well integrated tannins lead this medium bodied wine into ripe plum and blackcurrant fruit that fade to caramelised bramble crumble for a long drawn out finish. One of my favourite South African producers and far better than most Bordeaux at the price. £8.91 (2 or more bottles) at majestic wines currently.
