The third Tannat based wine M&S have on their shelves at the moment is a classic French ‘Madiran’… though one closer to entry level for the region than the bottle of ‘Domaine Picard’ I reviewed here. In the glass it has a deep ruby/black colour with a pink rim and an inky earthy black fruit aroma (prune, plum, blueberry), vanilla pod and the soft touch of a powdery/chalky minerality laying over it all. On the palate this is a complex wine with layers of savory inky minerality woven through with occasional flashes of jet-black fruit (black currant, black cherry) and a clean acidity that serves to highlight the high level of soft/powdery tannin that underpins it. This wine means business and has a very clear sense of place and purpose to it… I can imagine Asterix and Obelix enjoying a bottle of this over wild boar! £9 a bottle from M&S (£7 on offer).
