Ramón Bilbao ‘Single Vineyard’ Rioja 2012

One of my 'go-to' staple from Majestic Wines and one of the best wine matches with Curry I've found.

One of my ‘go-to’ staples from Majestic Wines and one of the best wine matches with Curry I’ve found.

This is one of my favourite Curry/Red wine matches. You may be used to thinking of Rioja in terms of Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva; but the region produces wines that are aged for shorter periods of time as well… such as this straight Rioja. Deep inky ruby colour with a Red cherry and tobacco leaf aroma. Medium bodied with Medium-high tannins that are still green and carry some grip. This is very much a food wine and loves meat and richer dishes that unleash the baked fruit (Red cherry, Blackberry and plum) on the palate with tobacco leaf, cigar box and a hint of toast ruling the surprisingly long and rewarding finish. With a good curry this wine develops a lovely strawberry’s and cream note and works alongside whatever chili heat may be present rather than fighting it. For those who are Rioja adverse and usually find them too big or headache inducing… this is the Rioja for you; give it a go, I think you’ll find it treads the line perfectly for your tastes/limits. £6.66 a bottle (with 2 or more bottles in your case) from Majestic Wines.
