Looks like M&S has a couple more Tannat based wines for us to enjoy! The last wine was from Argentina and this next one is another South American export, this time from Uruguay. In the glass it has a deep purple black colour with a medium intensity aroma of earthy yet ripe black & red berry fruits (black cherry, bramble blackberry raspberry, strawberry), Smokey barrel toast and a faint edge of tobacco leaf and coffee. On the palate the wine is surprisingly fresh and almost fruit driven (raspberry/strawberry) if not for a deep earthy slate like minerality framed by tight-knit yet green tannin scaffolding. While this is clearly a table wine, it’s a pleasantly rewarding blend of Southwestern French aromas (Madiran) with a Southeastern French palate (Beaujolais) and an earthy minerality more reminiscent of the Loir… Interesting to the say the least. £9 a bottle from M&S.
