Bored of Merlot? Then try Carmenère … It’s fast becoming one of my favourite red grape varieties; especially as the quality to price ratio is still so high in Chilean wines. This has a dark purple black colour with a youthful purple rim and a huge earthy bramble blackberry and savoury bell pepper aroma. Intense rich dark fruit (blackberry, blackcurrant) envelops the palate with mineral tinged inky weight and toasty edge. Firm weighty tannins provide some significant scaffolding to handle extended bottle ageing if you wish… Alternatively drink with a rare slab of steak and rejoice in the mouth party taking place before the long fruit driven finish. Mature cheeses and creamy curry are your friends with this wine. This is a Carmenère that showcases both its similarity to Merlot and its potential superiority… at this price point at least. £9.99 from M&S and well worth the price.
