This is a ‘Marlborough’ Sauvignon Blanc that’s a cut above the average. This single estate wine has the classic pale yellow colour with green tints and a rich gooseberry fruit aroma that you’d expect from the region; though there’s a good amount of lees stirred ‘yeasty’ complexity added on top. A fresh acidity, that’s perfectly in balance, and more of a medium bodied weight of fruit intensity on the palate than usual (gooseberry and elderflower); leading to a long mouth cleansing finish. The complexity, intensity and sheer lack of ‘hedge’ (‘blackcurrant leaf’ for the purists), lift this wine above other Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and at a bargain price to boot. This is a good example how age can benefit Sauvignon Blanc as long as the fruit is high enough in quality to begin with and the wine made in a style designed for aging. £8.99 from Majestic Wines (with 2 or more bottles in your case).
